The Complete Skincare Guide for British Men Over 50

Testing the contrast between luxury and high-street: Dior Sauvage vs. ManCave on my own skin

With over 13 years of testing and a background in pharmacy, I only recommend products I physically own and believe in. Your trust is the foundation of this home.

Twenty-five years ago I started taking my skin seriously. A few years later I was working in pharmacy which meant I could read an ingredients list and actually understand what I was looking at. In 2013 I turned that knowledge into a blog, eventually leaving pharmacy to review skincare full time.

Thirteen years. Over 500 products tested personally.

What has not changed in all that time is this: almost everything written about men's skincare ignores men over 50 entirely. The routines, the campaigns, the advice: all aimed at younger men.

I am Jerome. French, living in Britain since 2010, married to a British wife with four children, and in my fifties (52). Everything on this site I have used myself. This is the guide that should have existed years ago.

Why Your Skin Needs a Different Approach After 50

Before we get into products, it is worth understanding why skin after 50 is a genuinely different proposition: not just older skin, but skin that behaves differently and needs different things.

From around your mid-twenties, collagen production declines by roughly 1% per year. By your fifties that adds up to a significant reduction in the structural protein that keeps skin firm and resilient. Cell turnover slows too: young skin renews itself every 28 days, but after 50 that cycle can extend to 45 or even 60 days. Dead skin cells sit on the surface longer, which contributes to dullness, uneven texture, and a general lack of vitality that no amount of sleep seems to fix.

The skin barrier, its ability to retain moisture and protect against environmental aggressors also becomes less efficient. This is why many men find their skin becomes drier and more reactive in their fifties even if it was oily when they were younger.

None of this is dramatic or alarming. It is just biology. And once you understand it, the routine below makes complete sense because every step is addressing something specific that is actually happening to your skin right now.

Jerome’s Quick Verdict: The 5-Step Routine

After 13 years of testing, these are the products currently in my personal rotation.

Routine Step Jerome’s Top Pick Price Point Why It Won
1. Face Wash Horace Purifying Cleanser Mid-Range Refined texture; smoother skin than budget alternatives.
2. Face Scrub ManCave Face Scrub Affordable Perfect balance of exfoliation without 50+ irritation.
3. Daytime SPF Horace Mattifying SPF 30 Mid-Range Absorbs instantly; no white cast or "greasy" feel.
4. Night Cream Brickell Anti-Aging Premium Powerful DMAE & Peptides for actual overnight repair.
5. Eye Cream Brickell Restoring Premium The most effective formula for deep lines around the eyes.

The Five Steps Every Man Over 50 Needs

A good skincare routine does not need to be complicated. Five steps, the right products, done consistently. That is it.

Here is what I use, what I have tested, and what I honestly recommend across different budgets.

Step 1 : Face Wash

Why it matters after 50: Mature skin produces less sebum than younger skin, which means harsh cleansers that strip the skin's natural oils cause real damage. You need something that cleans effectively without leaving your face feeling tight or uncomfortable. A good face wash after 50 should leave your skin feeling clean and smooth, nothing more, nothing less.

What I have tested:

I have worked through face washes across every price point and the honest truth is that this is one category where spending more does not always mean getting more.

Bulldog Original Face Wash sits at the affordable end and consistently impresses me. It is gentle, effective, and leaves skin feeling genuinely clean without any of that stripped, tight feeling that cheaper cleansers can cause. For a British brand widely available on the high street: Boots, Superdrug, most supermarkets the quality to price ratio is difficult to argue with. If you are new to skincare and want to start simply, this is where I would tell you to begin.

Horace Purifying Face Cleanser sits in the mid-range and is a step up in terms of formulation. In my testing it leaves skin noticeably smoother than the Bulldog, with a slightly more refined texture and a clean, subtle scent. It is the one I reach for most consistently in my own morning routine.

Dior Sauvage Face Wash is the premium option and it is genuinely excellent. The cleansing experience is noticeably different: richer, more considered, and the skin feels particularly smooth and comfortable afterwards. Whether it is worth the price premium over Horace is a personal decision, but I can tell you from testing that the quality is real and not just the packaging.

Jerome's pick: Horace for everyday use. Dior Sauvage when I want something a little more considered.

Step 2 : Face Scrub

Why it matters after 50: This is the step most men over 50 skip and it is one of the most important. As cell turnover slows, dead skin cells accumulate on the surface for longer than they did when you were younger. Without regular exfoliation, skin looks dull, feels rough, and absorbs the moisturisers and treatments that follow far less effectively. Think of it as clearing the path for everything else to work properly.

Use a face scrub two to three times per week (instead of the face wash) not every day. Over-exfoliation is a real risk, particularly on mature skin that has less structural resilience than it once did.

What I have tested:

I have tested scrubs from across the market and right now my daily rotation includes the ManCave Face Scrub, which has genuinely impressed me. It exfoliates effectively without feeling abrasive a balance that is harder to achieve than it sounds. Many scrubs aimed at men are too aggressive for skin over 50, leaving it red and irritated rather than refreshed. The ManCave formula manages to be thorough without being harsh, and the price makes it easy to use consistently without thinking twice about it.

For a mid-range option, Horace Gentle Face Scrub is worth considering if you have particularly sensitive skin. It is slightly less intensive than the ManCave but very well formulated and kind to skin that reacts easily.

Jerome's pick: ManCave Face Scrub. Effective, affordable, and genuinely working well in my current routine.

Step 3 : Daytime Moisturiser with SPF

Why it matters after 50: I will be direct about this because it is the most important step in this entire guide.

UV radiation is responsible for approximately 80% of visible facial ageing, the lines, the dark spots, the loss of elasticity and uneven tone. And unlike collagen decline or slower cell turnover, UV damage is almost entirely preventable.

British men are particularly bad at using SPF consistently. I understand why, traditional sunscreens are thick, greasy, and leave a white cast. But this is 2026 and modern formulations have solved those problems entirely. There is genuinely no reason not to use SPF every morning, year round, regardless of whether you expect sun. The incidental UV from driving, walking between buildings, and sitting near windows accumulates to significant damage over years.

A daytime moisturiser with built-in SPF solves the problem of remembering two separate steps. One product, two jobs.

What I have tested:

My current favourite is the Horace Mattifying Face Moisturiser SPF 30. In my testing this has been the most practical daily SPF moisturiser I have found for men over 50 it applies cleanly, absorbs quickly, leaves no white cast, and does not feel like sunscreen at all. The mattifying effect is subtle rather than heavy, which suits mature skin well. Available online and in some UK stores, it sits in the mid-range price point that makes daily use easy to sustain.

For a premium mineral SPF option, the Blu Atlas Lightweight Mineral SPF 30 uses zinc oxide as its active filter ,a mineral ingredient that sits on the skin rather than being absorbed, making it a better choice for skin that has become more reactive with age. The texture is surprisingly light for a mineral SPF and it leaves no white cast, which was the deal-breaker for mineral sunscreens for years.

Jerome's pick: Horace SPF 30 for everyday use. My skin feels comfortable, protected, and never greasy.

Step 4: Night Cream

Why it matters after 50: Your skin does its most significant repair work while you sleep. Overnight is when cell renewal happens, when collagen synthesis is most active, and when the right ingredients can work most effectively without the interference of UV exposure, pollution, and the general demands of the day. A good night cream for men over 50 should be richer than your daytime moisturiser, more nourishing, more targeted, and formulated specifically for the overnight repair cycle.

This is not optional. If you are only going to add one product to your routine that you are not currently using, make it a dedicated night cream.

What I have tested:

Jerome applying Bulldog End of Day Recovery Night Cream to his face to test the texture and hydration for mature skin.

Applying the Bulldog Recovery Cream: It has a rich, comforting texture that doesn't feel greasy on the skin.

Bulldog Age End of Day Recovery Cream is a genuinely good entry point at an affordable price. I tested it over several weeks and found it does exactly what a basic night cream should it hydrates thoroughly overnight, skin feels noticeably more comfortable in the morning, and it is widely available across British high streets and supermarkets. For a man who wants to start simply without spending much, this is an honest recommendation.

Brickell Revitalizing Anti-Aging Cream is the premium option and it works at a different level entirely. The formulation combines DMAE ( which helps tighten the underlying facial muscle structure ) with MSM for pigmentation and uneven tone, Matrixyl 3000 peptides for collagen support, and hyaluronic acid for deep overnight hydration. It is doing several jobs simultaneously rather than just moisturising. The texture is rich without being heavy: it absorbs fully rather than sitting on top of the skin, which is exactly what you want from a night cream. In my testing this is the one I return to most consistently at the premium end.

Jerome's pick: Bulldog if you are starting out or watching your budget. Brickell if you want to invest in something that works harder overnight.

Step 5: Eye Cream

Why it matters after 50: The skin around your eyes is the thinnest on your face: approximately 0.5mm compared to around 2mm elsewhere. It has fewer oil glands, less collagen support, and is under constant mechanical stress from blinking, squinting, and facial expressions. It ages faster and more visibly than anywhere else on your face, which is why dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines around the eyes are often the first signs of ageing that men in their fifties notice and want to address.

Your regular face moisturiser is not designed to do this job. The skin around the eyes needs specific ingredients delivered in a formulation designed to penetrate that thin, delicate tissue without causing irritation. A good eye cream is not a luxury after 50, it is maintenance.

Apply morning and evening using your ring finger — the weakest finger, which naturally applies the least pressure. Tap gently rather than rubbing.

What I have tested:

Jerome using the metal applicator of the Horace 8h Sleep Eye Contour to reduce puffiness and hydrate the under-eye area.

The cooling metal applicator on the Horace eye cream is a game-changer for reducing morning puffiness without tugging at the delicate skin.

Horace Under-Eye Moisturiser is my mid-range recommendation and has performed consistently well in my testing. It addresses the two concerns most men over 50 actually have (dark circles and puffiness ) with a lightweight gel texture that absorbs quickly without feeling heavy or leaving any residue on the skin. It works particularly well in the morning routine before SPF.

Brickell Restoring Eye Cream is the premium option and genuinely one of the best men's eye creams I have tested at any price point. The formulation is more sophisticated combining caffeine for puffiness, peptides for fine lines, and vitamin K for dark circles. In extended testing I found visible improvement in the depth of fine lines around my eyes over six to eight weeks. It is not cheap, but it is one of the products where the price is justified by the performance.

Jerome's pick: Both, honestly. Horace in the morning for its lightweight texture under SPF. Brickell at night when I want the more intensive treatment.

Where to Buy

If you’re looking to start or upgrade your routine with the products I’ve tested and discussed above, here is where I usually find them for the best price and reliability in the UK:

Horace: You can find their full range, including the 8h Sleep Eye Contour, directly on the Horace website .

Brickell: For the Revitalizing Anti-Aging Cream, I usually go through Amazon UK (Check current price here) for the fast delivery.

Bulldog: While you can pick up the Recovery Night Cream at most major UK supermarkets, you can also find it conveniently on Amazon if you're ordering your other essentials at the same time .

Dior: The Sauvage skincare range is a premium investment, usually available at Boots or high-end department stores like Selfridges.

One Last Thing

You do not need to start with everything at once. If you are new to skincare, start with a face wash and a daytime SPF moisturiser. Use them every day for four weeks. Then add the night cream. Then the eye cream. Build the habit before you build the routine.

The men who look genuinely well for their age at 65 or 70 are not the ones who found a miracle product in their sixties. They are the ones who started simply, stayed consistent, and kept going.

That is all this is. Simple. Consistent. Honest.
